FAQ

What denomination is St. Mary’s?

St. Mary’s is an ecumenical and eucharistic church. While the church itself is not formally affiliated with a single denomination, our staff and visiting clergy serve under a variety of ecclesiastical oversight. Our staff priests, Fr. Danny Bryant and Rev. Flo Oakes, are ordained in the Episcopal Free Fellowship of America. In addition, we have welcomed clergy from many traditions to preach and preside, including Methodist, Lutheran, Jesuit, Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Anglican, Episcopal, and others.

What is a worship service like?

Our worship is liturgical and sacramental, shaped by our Anglican/Episcopal roots, but we hold those traditions loosely. We generally follow the Revised Common Lectionary for our preaching schedule and use the Book of Common Prayer in our readings and prayers. We celebrate Eucharist every week. Our priests and Eucharistic ministers wear robes seasonally (Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, etc.), but not all throughout the year. Our music also reflects that blend: on any given Sunday you’ll hear a mix of hymns and non-liturgical music. We hope our worship is restful, joyful, and welcoming for everyone.

What do you offer for children?

Learn more about Children’s Ministry and Safety here.

  • Nursery (under 4): Nursery care is available for the duration of the service and is staffed by trained nursery workers. Some caregivers choose to bring children into the service for Eucharist.

  • Godly Play (ages 4 through 4th grade): Godly Play begins at the start of the service and lasts about 45–50 minutes. Children typically return in time for Eucharist.

  • Children in worship: Children are always welcome to stay in the service with parents/caregivers at anytime, full stop. A “Prayground” (activity carts) is set up along the far wall in front of the sanctuary for children to use and enjoy during worship.

What is LGBTQ+ inclusion like?

All people, without exception, are invited to fully participate in the life of St. Mary’s, including every sacrament, blessing, and ministry (including ordination and leadership), with the same responsibilities and privileges as any other member. We welcome everyone regardless of race, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or background.

Is there a membership requirement?

There is no formal membership requirement at St. Mary’s. Membership is considered to be belonging to the community through receiving the Eucharist together and offering either time or resources to the community. If you would like to learn more about our affiliated order, The Order of Berrigan and Day, you can read more about it here

When and where do you meet, and where do I park?

We are committed to renting space instead of owning a building in order to allow space for necessary responses as various just demands are made for followers of Christ.

  • Sunday worship: Sundays at 4:00 p.m. at Glendale United Methodist Church, 900 Glendale Lane, Nashville, TN 37204.

  • Parking: There is a large parking lot with ample parking on the side of the church.

  • Entrance: For safety and security, we currently use one entrance only: the breezeway door next to the playground. Please enter through one of the playground gates to reach the breezeway door.

  • Midweek Eucharist: Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. in the youth room.

How do I get involved?

We are not highly program-driven and restfulness is a strong value at St. Mary’s. But there are ways to join in the work together, such as Lay Eucharistic Ministry, Godly Play, Music, Hospitality, and other various service projects. Still, we encourage folks to prioritize serving neighbor instead of church as much as you are able.

For events like after church dinners, children and youth events, book clubs, etc., please see our community calendar here. Ideas for gatherings are always welcome and encouraged!
