Common Conversation | Advent, Soul Care, and Economic Injustice

In his book Caring for Souls in a Neoliberal Age, Dr. Bruce Rogers-Vaughn explains how the current global capitalistic system is the leading cause of suffering in our age. As a pastoral counselor and ordained Baptist minister, Rogers-Vaughn’s work asks questions around how those who care for souls can move into this space to relieve and heal that suffering.

Fr. Bruce Morrill, SJ teaches at Vanderbilt and is a trusted source for sacramental and liturgical worship. His work, Divine Worship and Human Healing: Liturgical Theology at the Margins of Life and Death, explores how sacramental theology, especially amongst the sick, dying, deceased, and grieving discloses God’s merciful love amidst communities of faith.

Fr. Danny Bryant, pastor of St. Mary of Bethany, will host a conversation on Monday, December 5th from 6:30-8 with both of these authors to discuss how observing Advent can cultivate space for the healing and care of souls while pushing back on global economic injustice. The evening will also include music, poetry, and scripture.
